NARRATOR: "AmericanHorror Story" consistently appalls and enchantsus with an array of extraordinary charactersand extreme situations. [SCREAMING] However, more than a handfulof these despicable depictions are based on real worldpeople and events. Devil's night. I have a standing reservation. NARRATOR: Here are eightvillains from history who have been glorified forour sadistic entertainment. [GUN SHOT] [STAB] [SCREAMING] Welcome to America. NARRATOR: KathyBates' Madame Lalaurie relishes torturing her slaves. She's also quite partial toa face mask of fresh blood. When the blooddries my skin, it's supposed to be tight as a drum. NARRATOR: Horrifically, the real Madame Lalaurie is not too far off. Marie Delphine Lalaurie wasa well-liked New Orleans socialite born in 1780. She was considered a fundamentalmember of the bourgeois society until her sadistic indulgenceswere exposed after a slave set her kitchen on fire. Upon seeing Lalaurie'shouse ablaze, neighbors rushed to help andfound a panicked Lalaurie in an attic fullof tortured slaves. One account recalls severalsuspended by their necks with their limbs stretched out. And another speaks of one manwith a head full of maggots. The really horrifyingthing about this is that this form ofcruelty to human slaves was not unheard of forthis time and place. [SPLATTER] The Axeman was an elegantblend of serial killer and jazz musician. In 1919, as NewOrleans was struggling to recover after aspate of murders, The Axeman sent policea confession note proclaiming his victims namesand intent to kill again. However, the note promised anyhousehold playing jazz would be spared from a murderous visit. The real world Axeman'sidentity was never discovered. But what is known is that hespent his evenings between 1918 and 1919 breaking into homesto kill women, and sometimes their husbands as well. [CIRCUS MUSIC PLAYING] [EVIL LAUGHTER] Twisty was dropped onhis head as a child, resulting in a mildmental disability. In 1943, he performed as asuccessful traveling clown. But pedophile rumorsruined his reputation. Distraught, Twistytried to kill himself, but only succeeded inblowing off his jaw, leaving him horribly disfigured. He mentally unraveledfurther, kidnapping children and keeping them in cageson an abandoned bus. There is no exact real worldequivalent of Twisty the clown. But history tells us ofseveral killer clowns. One of the most notableis John Wayne Gacy who performed at partiesas Pogo the Clown until he was convictedof 33 murders in 1980. All the victims were young menwho he had molested or raped before he murdered them. [JAZZ MUSIC PLAYING] James March was animmaculately dressed and cold-bloodedpsychopath who built his own hotel in the 1920s. The hotel was the ultimatepervert's playground designed to allow him to hunt, hide, and torture his victims. You got to go out-- [SCREAM] --and grab life. NARRATOR: Mr. Marchis based on one of America's first serialkillers-- Henry Howard Holmes. Holmes custom built his ownhotel of horrors in 1893. It was full of hiddendoorways, stairs that lead to nowhere, windowless rooms, and a body-sized incinerator. He was also a con artist andonce convinced his friend Benjamin Pitezel to partakein an insurance scam, faking Pitezel's death, andcollecting life insurance. It all went to plan, exceptHolmes really did kill him. He was eventually caughtand confessed to 27 murders. But estimates put the actualbody count to be more than 200. The "Devil's Night"episode saw the revival of several notorious realworld serial killers. When was the last time a chickreally turned you inside out? NARRATOR: Aileen Wuornos,a former prostitute who killed seven clients inFlorida between 1989 and 2002. Richard Ramirez, AKAthe Night Stalker, went on a murderoushome invasion spree in Los Angeles in the 1980s. He was convicted of 13 counts ofmurder, five attempted murders, and 11 counts of sexual assault.Serial killer and sex offender Jeffrey Dahmer also dropped by. I want to make them part of me. NARRATOR: Dahmer was responsiblefor the rape, murder, and dismemberment of 17boys between 1978 and 1991. Not to be left out, theinfamous zodiac killer and the aforementionedJohn Wayne Gacy also stopped in for a biteand some casual murder. [SCREAMING] You've the seen thecreepiest real life killers to inspire "AmericanHorror Story." Is there anotherfigure from history that haunts your nightmares?
