resurrection a broken motherboard-bent socket pins
This is an ASUS Zenith Extreme A $550 X399 motherboard for AMD's thread Ripper CPU it was returned to me from one of the writers And I was informed that it no longer works. Okay, well this is going to be on it's a pretty anticlimactic here I fixed it! HP's new OMEN X lineup comes equipped with Intel's seventh generation core i7 processors check them out at the link below So what you observe just there was one of the many Peculiarities When it comes to bent pins in a modern LGA type CPU socket it can manifest in any number of ways a failure to post altogether an inability to detect memory inserted it into certain slots that one's actually very common or the system can appear to be functioning completely normally all cores detected all 128 gigs of ram detected The reason for this is that every CPU pin has a slightly different function some of them are wired directly through traces on the motherboard Which you can actually see there's tons of traces around a CPU socket to a contact point on a memory slot Some of them serve redundant purposes like to act as a a ground pin while others May have no functionality whatsoever like they might be reserved for a future CPU that might go into that socket with some feature that might not ever get implemented So that is why the symptoms of a bent CPU pin can be as obvious as the system Not lighting up at all or as subtle as Slightly less stability when you're heavily overclocked So one way or another We need to fix this pin So no big deal Linus send it in to the manufacturer for repairs right? Wrong. First of all Physical damage to the product is not covered by any motherboard manufacturer that I'm aware of and they all consider Socket damage to be physical damage and number two is an out of warranty repair to a CPU socket can cost as much as Three hundred and fifty dollars. That's what I got quoted when I wanted to repair a socket on an X99 EWS motherboard even though it was a $400 board I'm not gonna run out and spend three hundred and fifty dollars So that I can have a B stock board when it cost me fifty more dollars to just go buy a brand new one So then with that in mind, what do you need to repair your own bent socket pins? Really with a steady hand and a sewing needle you can probably do a pretty good job But I've used everything from a pocket knife to a sim removal tool To a thumbtack in order to bend back pins and I've done it with all of those with success I even used the pointy tweezers from an iFixit kit once For today we're gonna be using these picks that I actually just found here in the workshop Organization's beautiful right? Offscreen: This is going to save us so much time in the future Yeah! It was super exciting and we're gonna be using these helping hands with a magnifying glass Something that I also recently bought just in case someone bent a socket pin and they did so one of the trickiest parts of any socket repair operation is Figuring out where the bent pins are the best way to do that is to get down low level with the socket so that You can see whether it's straight across this way straight across that way or at a diagonal you Can see the gaps between the rows of pins that's gonna make it easier for your eye to pick out any imperfections For our case. We know exactly where it is, so we're going to get up above it now We need to assess the damage so we're just gonna prod at it a little bit And this one seems pretty obvious so you can see There's an even row of pins here an even row of pins here and then here There's a missing one now if this pin was broken off We'd be in much rougher shape right now, but you can actually see that It's not it's just bent down so we just got to find where it bent down to looks like Looks like it's done right there wow that is That is dug in pretty deep there. Now there is always a risk When you're working on something like this That you will accidentally bend some other pins in the process As long as you're careful it shouldn't happen Hmm this pick might not actually be fine enough for me here. I'm gonna go back to my trusty knife I actually use the knife more often than You'd probably think for this sort of thing so you want something that you can use to get under The pin and pull it up there so you can see I've pulled it up off the bottom now But it's not quite aligned With the other pins so the chances of it making perfect contact with the pads on the bottom of the CPU Is pretty low. Now that we've pried it up from the side the easiest way to attack it now is to go at it from underneath Head-on that way you can over bend it up a little bit So you want to come under it this way now and over bend it up a bit because it's metal so You can't just bend it to exactly where you want it and then expect it to stay there okay, cool. That was exactly the desired result There is we bent it up a little higher than we wanted and it settled right back in Exactly where it's supposed to be so now we can check the alignment of the pins, and we see a nice little bright dot Exactly where we expected perfectly aligned. Let's go test it And we're back the system works Very good Linus you fixed a working motherboard ah I have another trick for you up my sleeve. This is a sacrificial board from a project we never did because someone a different member of our writing staff didn't realize that this motherboard Wasn't gonna fit into any standard cases So what we're gonna do is we're gonna simulate What would be a pretty common way to damage a CPU socket, whoops that one was actually accidental. Dropping the CPU as you go to install Oh, okay, yeah, we definitely hit one. Let's try again Okay, I'm having a pretty hard time mangling the socket here. Oh now that? That is a bent socket let's try and fix it shall we Something people might notice about the second round of repair here is that I'm not even necessarily gonna try and get it exactly Perfect because what you're gonna realize is that the contact pads on the bottom of the CPU are actually Reasonably big I mean, they're not huge. You still need to get pretty darn close but if you are pretty close and You remember too that when you put the CPU in it pushes down into the LGA the land grid array, then as long as you're good enough that once it gets pushed down a bit It'll be in pretty much the right spot Then you should be good enough whoops This guy over here is probably still a little bit too far out of alignment Now you want to make sure that you don't bend them down and up and down and up too much Because if you do that they lose their strength and can eventually break off you can recover from that I have done it by straightening out the shape of the pin As long as there's enough left to get to the contact point but it's not a sure thing and I did end up with a board that I snapped off the top of the pad and uhh Was not able to resurrect Another key thing to watch out for when you're looking for bent pins is that there are places where pins are missing intentionally so it's always good to double check against a socket diagram like see this corner right here. There's no pin there That's fine, or another perfect socket that you have on hand Okay Moment of truth time okay there we go That beep is a good sign and CPU detected two gigs of memory, yeah, that's right repaired motherboard So that's pretty much it guys how to bring your motherboard back from the dead assuming that there aren't other issues on it like blown capacitors or fizzled out resistors and Thanks for watching Now let's say for a minute You make your money doing like small-time computer repair like this for others well Then you want to check out fresh books fresh books is the cloud-based accounting Solution that lets you get paid faster be more organized and be more productive Spend your time doing work So you can get paid like you can track your hours on a job you can bill the client through the platform You can even see when the client has seen the invoice Instead of spending your time fighting with a complicated Accounting solution at the end of the day when your brain is tired And you just plain don't feel like it the best thing about fresh books is you can try it out for 30 days for free By going to freshbooks.com/techtips and entering Linus tech tips into how you heard about us section So thanks for watching guys if you dislike this video you can hit that button But if you liked it hit the like button get subscribed maybe consider checking out where to buy Motherboards at the link in the video description just in case this doesn't work for you Also down there. We have a link to our merch store, which has cool shirts like this one as well as our community forum Which you should totally join

Unboxing counterfeit Ltt merch!
- Uh...- I'm crying. - This may surprise you, but counterfeit Linus Tech Tips merch has actually existed for longer than real Linus Tech Tips merch. So for a laugh, we rounded up every fake LTT product we could find on Amazon, Ali Express, and others, ordered all of it, and I am going to be unboxingand reviewing it for you guys. I think this is gonna be a lot of fun. (upbeat music) Oh my God, this is awful. I hope I didn't pay too much for it. Just like I hope oursponsor didn't pay too much for this sloppily recordedoutside of the video sponsor spot. Are you lagging out while gaming? Use GlassWire and see whatapps are wasting your bandwidth and causing your games to lag. Get 25% off using offer codeLINUS at the link down below. (upbeat music) This one's off amazon.ca, and it is the WXZDH Linus Tech Tips Men's Comfortable T-shirtand Hats Combination Black. WXZDH is not a brand. You got some loose threads here. Okay, no, I don't know if I would describe this construction really,it feels pretty cheap. I would expect that the cost, like materials cost, onthis hat's like a dollar. Okay, what about the shirt though? What about the shirt? Oh, I was gonna to say,the shirt's not bad, but that print quality, Lordy. There's a reason we hadthese things printed with our supplier here down the street. There's just no substitutefor the care and attention of someone who cares and pays attention. (Linus laughing) How old is this logo? This is ancient. We haven't used this logo in years. How much work is it to actually line up the two layers of the print? So you can see, with some colors, you actually have to do a white layer before you do your color layer, and they went so cheap andso sloppy on the orange ink that it doesn't even cover, and you can actually seethe white through it, especially at the edges. The T-shirts not bad. Our merch team said that apparently the hat smells really bad, so now, oh, it does smell really bad. Oh, what the hell? Why? Oh. Oh, I'll be modeling all thismerch for you as you go out, this is a really shallow hat, like, okay. How do I look, David? - [David] You could go to a 70's party. (Linus laughing) - Linus Tech Tips boxer briefs, L-Inus Te-ch Ti-ps. (plastic rustling) They even know they'reinfringing our trademark. This is 95% polyester, 5% spandex. Ride up problem is caused by choosing a smaller size than you need, please check your leg circumference. Okay, this is great. Keeps your stuff in place. It has two sets ofquotation marks on stuff. Oh, white inside, particularly with the V1 ones, we would have stronglypreferred, a more vibrant color, and one of the ways toget a more vibrant color on your print is to have awhite fabric that you then dye. New guy, do you want whiteinsides of your underwear? I'm not saying you looklike a skid marker, that's not what I'm saying. I'm just saying, David, would you want whiteinsides of your underwear? - [David] Oh, most definitely not. - Most definitely not. I mean, we all knew this wasgonna be an awkward shoot before it began. So man, I didn't realize quite how naked I was gonna be getting today. I thought this was all gonnabe like T-shirts and stuff. That's what happens when youask Sarah to scour the internet for counterfeit merch. I know it sucks, but- Oh, wait a second. This doesn't even have a, you can't even, how do you pee? There's no thing. Oh, yeah, how do I look? They're very shiny. - [David] You look like you'reabout to take a bike ride. - Without getting into too much detail about how the anatomy of stuff works, this is a really square pouch. (Linus laughs) It's just flat, see? It doesn't actually have a pouch. This is way more awkwardthan I actually expected. Let's have a look at the merchteam's notes on this one. The white fabric color shows through where the material is stretched. Oh yeah, I didn't even notice that. Look how different the colorof this is when you stretch it. What is this? Avber Mens Women HeadbandL-Inus Te-Ch Ti-Ps Fashion Quick Dry MoistureWicking Sports Sweatband for Yoga, Running, Basketball, Cycling. Anti-skid design. Too bad the underwear didn't have that. Hey. All right, all right. Show me this headband. It looks terrible. It's sewn at the back, so youcan't unfold it all the way, and then it's like big at the front. I mean, do I just look like an idiot? - [David] No, you looklike you're on Survivor. - Oh, good. Super easy to clean, justrinse it out in the sink, and hang it up to air-dry. No, that is not actuallyhow you clean things. You know what? Okay, all right, all right. This one's not that bad. I could get into this one. It kind of bunches upweird at the back though. That's not really very comfortable. Oh, next up, we've got a beanie. We've got a tuque. Oh wow, it looks terrible. And why does it say fashionable T-Obie Ke-Ith HedgingHead Hat for Men Women? What is a head hat? This is not a beanie at all. Hold on a second, this is the same thing. It feels like the same quality bag that you get for free with likeyour power supply, you know? - [David] Oh, yeah, yeah. - Yeah, like that's what it feels like. Oh, it's not uncomfortable,it's really tight. Okay, just a sec. - [David] Ew. - [Sarah] Looks likeyou're going swimming. - [David] Yeah. (Sarah laughing) - The model's just got itkind of like floppy doodling in the back here.- Ew. - Hold on one second, where's the logo? Just, okay, wait a minute, this print is a completely different size from what's in the picture. I would have to do awhole turn on the catwalk for anyone to know whatbrand I'm wearing here. This is it, proof's in the pudding, baby. This is a dramatically superior product. I mean, it does cost twice asmuch, but it's like, come on. How much better do I lookright now, LTTstore.com? But part of the deal here is I actually have to wearthe counterfeit merch. That's why I'm wearing theunderwear and this ugly shirt. Oh, there's a mouse pad. Well, we've been out ofstock of our mousepad for quite some time. Maybe a counterfeit mousepad is your solution to having an LTT mousepad. This one actually looks pretty good. It's three millimeter rubber, ours is three and a half. I found the extra littlebit of cushion was nice. All right, hit me with this one. This is the least crappy counterfeit merch we've seen so far. It's not as big as it seems like it's gonna be in the picture. This is a very deceptive looking picture. The measurements are in theproduct description though, so, okay, all right. It's currently unavailablebecause, as we know, it's impossible to keepan LTT mousepad in stock, but actually not bad. And they at least rippedoff our current logo. I think this has beenmodified from that fan version that we got permissionto use for that wallpaper that we use all the time. Overall, I wouldn't belike furious if I got this. Our black is blacker. Okay, well little things. So we're not gonna be switching suppliers to one that ripped offour products anytime soon. Next up we've got the LinusTech Tips GPU sweatshirt, oh, this is pretty straight forward then. So they just took our GPU T-shirt design, threw it on a sweatshirt. Our apparels with outstanding quality are screen printed anddesigned in the USA. I can tell you for afact that that artwork was not designed in the USA. Hit me with it. (upbeat music) This is dog (beeps). - [Sarah] I gagged when I looked at it. - They aren't printingwith gold foil at all. This is just yellow, and you know what it actually looks like? Is they just took like a thumbnailsized picture of the gold and then blew it up to sweatshirts size. Also this does say it's a hoodie. This doesn't even have a hood. Like I get it, guys, we'reworking on sweatshirts, we really are, we justhaven't found anything that meets our standard, and this sure as heck isn't gonna be it. Just buy the gray crewneck. Okay? It's French Terry, it's super heavy. It's got like stealthy pockets with zippers and and all of that. Someone made a LinusEtch Tips throwpillow. How did you find this stuff? - [Sarah] Magic. A lot of searching. - All right, hit me with it. (upbeat music) Now that's somethingyou need looking at you from your couch. You know what? This one's not bad. It's like if I ordered this, and I was like I wantLinus' face on a pillow, creepily staring at me, you up? (Sarah laughing) Mission accomplished, ladies and gentlemen. Are they allowed to use Linus' picture? No. You know what? New award, best counterfeitmerch, this pillow. It needs a better fill, with like more alpaca wool, like our CPU pillow. This is a much higherquality pillow right here. 23 US dollars, I'm okay with buying this. Still, what they're doing isillegal, and they better stop. Linus Etch Tips throw blanket. (upbeat music) This thing is huge. What?(upbeat music) I don't know why anyonein their right mind needs to own this, but now they can. When you go like thisyou can tell the dye job is not very good, like there'sthere's problems with it. But if we could find a good supplier, do you guys want something like this? I mean, you've got to letus know in the comments. If you see anything. This picture, it looks so bad. The one on the bed, where myface is all like distorted. You see this thing? - [David] Ew!(Sarah laughing) - I'll be watching the restof this unboxing eagerly. Apparently we've got a T-shirt coming up. This is also from Red Bubble, hit me. The good news is that, at least from the pictures of this one, I have very lowexpectations of the quality. Cold wash only, don't tumble dry. Don't slap pandas. I can get behind that, Iwouldn't slap a Panda either. This is a really crappy T-shirt. Comfy material, just really thin. How distorted does my face look right now? - [David] It is unrecognizable. - [Linus] Cool. - [David] It also lookslike you have two mouths. - They're custom printing these obviously, like nobody, in their rightmind, would mass produce this. The print quality is actually not bad. Here come leggings. - [David] Yeah, baby. - This poor stock model,I think it's the same one from the last one. Do not slap Pandas, sothis is from the same brand as the shirt I'm wearing. So I could have a matching ensemble here. If you have it on, Linus'face will stretch out on different parts of the leg. (David laughing) Thanks, Sarah. You got the wide face, you've got the narrow face, you've got the short face. How do I look? Like do these make my butt look big? - [Sarah] I thinkthey're flattering, yeah. - Are they flattering? Okay. I also have two pairs ofunderwear for support though. So.(David laughing) what the hell is a face skirt? (David laughing) - [David] Back to the lab. - Why the hell would anybody buy this? I'd love to be able tosee on a site like this how many units they've ever sold ever? 'Cause I bet the numberfor this one is zero. (Sarah laughing) - [Sarah] Your butt looks great now. - Does it? I got four layers now, it's tight. I've never worn a skirt before, but my understanding is you're supposed to kind of sit like this in them. Right? - Yeah, definitely.- Okay, cool. Oh my God. There's socks.(Sarah laughing) The ink is really saturated. It feels sticky and hard is what the merch team hasto say about these socks. Oh, these look horrible. What's uglier? My ugly feet or this ugly sock? Head to toe Linus Tech Tips, baby. How sexy am I right now,? You know what? To their credit, theover-saturation of the color actually is reduced bystretching it out on my foot. So it's intentional. It's a feature, not a bug. Oh my God. There's a mask. Just, just give it to me. (Sarah laughing) Look at this, look at this Photoshop. (David laughing)(upbeat music) (Linus laughing) Oh, what now? What is a Peekaboo pocket T-Shirt? Can you show me this? (Sarah laughing)(David laughing) This looks like dog crap. This mask is horribleand my breath is bad. We managed to attract a crowd. - [Male] This one's not for sale. - Don't miss the showhere, ladies and gentlemen. What is this? LTT Essential T-shirt Comic Sans logo. Why? I mean, they Comic Sans'd our logo. This is so unhappy. LTT Essential Shirt Shirt, hit me with this one. The print quality is just atrocious. There's a hole in it. They've got a hole in the print. There's an Etsy one. It's a CPU pillowcase. This seller got banned withina few weeks of us ordering it. So there's no link anymore. Assembled in the USA. All right, hit me with it. (Linus laughing) This is supposed to be the CPU pillow. I says, pardon? (Linus laughs) I think not. How much did I pay for this atrocity? - [Sarah] I think it was like $40. - What? $40? - [Sarah] And it didn'teven come with a pillow. - Oh, there's a componentslightweight sweatshirt. Oh, okay. They ripped off that design that we did as a crew only design, andthe printing is terrible. Okay, all right. This is the last pieceof counterfeit merch that I will put on today. Ew, the inside feels terrible. It looks like a movietheater logo in the nineties. Hey, we designed that. Well, you didn't, I know. Oh, I can't believe this stuff exists. I hope you guys enjoyed this. If you want real LTT merch, please go to LTTstore.com. We got underwear in stock. We got water bottles. We have much better tuques than this gross, horriblething that I'm wearing. And you know what? There is a lack of Linus face printed on absolutelyeverything you can think of, but I can't believe our poor sponsor sponsored this video. Want to make your own websiteselling fake LTT merch? I'm still mad but buy it anyway- rtx 3060 review
Ampere Architectu
[26/02, 9:55 am] Wwww: - You don't know what this GPUhas been through to get here, nor do you know how manyof them didn't make it, but here it is, the GeForceRTX 3060 Nvidia long awaited premium mid range Ampere architecture GPU. This, this is the one that'sdestined to top SteamCharts for the most popular gamingcard on the freaking planet for at least as long as it's forefather or fore grandfather the GTX 1060 did. But that assumes a coupleof things doesn't it? One, that it's actually any good. And of course number two, that Nvidia can make enough of them. One thing we can alwaysmake enough of though is smooth segues to our sponsors. X-Team provides highperforming teams of developers to some of the world's leading brands. Join X-Team and become partof an energizing community for developers at the linkin the video description. (bright upbeat music) It's hard to believe that the GTX 1060 is nearly five years old at this point. That's how long it's been sinceanything has even come close to the level of bang for the buck that this card represented. It beat out the contemporaryPolaris-based RX 480 and AMD's hey at leastyou tried RX 580 Refresh, then Nvidia themselves tried to make the magic lightening strike again. First with the RTX 2060, thenwith their GTX 1600 series. I mean those are both goodproducts, don't get me wrong, but the 1060 is still the top dog on Steam's Hardware Survey, so it's clear that mid range gamers were hungry for something better. That's why so much isriding on the RTX 3060. Nvidia is explicitly targeting you, the nearly 10% of you outthere who are watching this on a 1060 and spoiler alert, this is it. This is going to be theGPU to finally topple it. At least that's what I would say, if the replacement were comingin at the same price point while the $329 US pricetag does make sense next to the GTX 1060 6 GBFounders Edition at $299 at least after we adjusted for inflation there is no Founder'sEdition this time around just a reference design. So you are definitelystill paying an RTX tax. This may give AMD and inwith their tease there of what is almost certainlythere RX 6700 series. Get subscribed by the way soyou don't miss our coverage of those cards when they launch. Unlike the RTX 3060 TI which does have a Founder's Edition, the RTX 3060 comes with50% more GDDR6 memory but that's constrainedto a slower 192 bit bus as for it's faster clocked CUDA Cores. Well they're faster clocks, but they've been cut to just shy of threequarters of its TI sibling. Compared to the GTX 1060 though, the RTX 3060 gets all the goodies that come with Nvidia'slatest Ampere architecture like Ray Tracing, HDMI 2.1 forup to 4K 120 Hertz displays, Nvidia broadcast andthe Turing NVENC engine that's just so good for streaming. That means that as longas performance is good the extra ask from Nvidia is likely to be more than worth it. So then here's our GPU bench and here's the cards we'llbe comparing against. We wish there were more but we really didn't have a lot of time. We got this via very unconventional means 'cause our other ones werestuck, that thing we said before. Starting the Shadow ofthe Tomb Raider then, it's no surprise that intraditional rasterization the GTX 1060 falls waybehind the new RTX 3060. What is a little surprising? And this could be good news for you. Is that the RTX 2060 SUPER come so close. So if you did shell outfor last generation, well you shouldn't feel toocompelled to upgrade here. Back to those who didn't though, well this might finally be it the card that makes RTX mainstream. I mean check this out, with RTX on the 3060 managers higherperformance numbers at 1080p than the GTX 1060 gets with RTX off. As for the 1060 withRTX on, well we tried it but it crashed out dueto a display driver reset that nearly took therest of the PC with it. F1 2020 sees the 3060pulling further ahead of the RTX 2060 SUPER with a total improvemententering the high 20% before dipping back down to the low 10s in Forza Horizon 4, as for the GTX 1060 well, it struggled to maintain aframe rate much higher than 60. Then there's Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Youngblood is a highlyoptimized Vulkan title and it shows in how much ofa performance chasm there is between the GTX 1060 andthe rest of the pack. And the 1060 straightup refuses to even run Vulkan Ray Tracing since non RTX cards rely onthe DirectX 12 Fallback Layer. As for Microsoft Flight Simulator it's basically unplayable on the GTX 1060 unless you're willing toreduce the graphics quality. And remember guys, this is at 1080p so you can't exactly justkeep dropping down the Rez and still have a great experience. The CUDA Grass for Pascal though really is CS: GO performance. And you might look atthese numbers and think what's the problem? But Nvidia's Frames Win Games, motto isn't for nothing. The faster a frame can be rendered and pushed to your display. The more up-to-date the information that hits your eyes is going to be. And for a game like CS: GOespecially in a competitive match that makes a big difference. So the rule of thumb then is that you want minimum frame rates that are no lower than double the refresh rate of your display. That gives you optimalframe pacing and input leg. So on a 60 Hertz display, hey, you're good to go with this, don't even worry about it,187 FPS minimum, no problem. As soon as you upgrade toa 120 Hertz display though, which is surprisingly affordable you are not gonna be doing so hot. If you're cold, by the way try this sweater fromittstore.com, it's very warm. Moving on to productivity, the GTX 1060 has an obviousdisadvantage going in lacking both the Turing and Ampere generationalperformance improvements. Even knowing that though it is staggering to see just how badly it gets beaten here. The RTX 3060 manages tosignificantly outpace the last gen RTX 2060 SUPER,let alone the geriatric 1060 where that card it's rendering performance can charitably be described as adequate if you don't value your time. The RTX 3060 easily doubleseven the 2060 SUPER scores across the board upuntil we hit OctaneBench where the gap does narrow but then interestingly, theRTX 3060 TI widens its lead. SPECviewperf meanwhile lookslike it's largely a tie between the RTX 3060 and the 2060 SUPER with a few wins here and therebut nothing mind blowing. It's worth mentioning that the RTX 3060 narrower192 bit memory bus puts it at a disadvantagein some of these tests but it still keeps well ahead of the 1060 thanks to its higher speed GDDR6 and everything else it's better about it. As for our particular variant we were supposed to have anEVGA card, then a Asus one, then a different EVGA one, we ended up with a MSI VENTUS 2X. It's got a pretty modest cool compared to some of the topend variants of RTX 3060 but even this card peaked at temperatures of about 70 degreesthroughout SPECviewperf, with a very similarcooling and noise profile to not only the RTX 3060 TI but also the 2060 SUPER and even GTX 1060. And all of this was while maintaining roughly our cards maximumboost clock of 1.9 gigahertz, which suggests that this GPU has significant thermal headroom and may be able to be pushed much harder with the right board and cooler. With an 8-Pin PCI Express power connector. It goes without saying thatthe RTX 3060 draws more power than the 6-Pin GTX 1060, and this is reflected inits official power rating. At peak, it drew a cool40-watts less though than the more powerful RTX 3060 TI with a peak of just over 160-watts. That's good, but what's more impressive is that it drew less powerthan even the RTX 2060 SUPER which peaked it over 175-watts. While the older GTX 1060certainly did manage lower power consumption on average though, it actually manages to spiketo around the same maximum. So RTX 3060 is looking pretty darn good as far as thermals and power consumption. I mean overall there'svery little to complain about in terms of performance. It's just that, and this at risk ofbeating a dead horse here. Availability may be a different issue. Now it is possible that thesewill be more widely available than previous RTX 30 series launches but while Nvidia seemed confident that there would be lots of supply, a couple of retailers thatwe've spoken to locally have some doubts about that,at least out of the gate. So if that's true, todaycould be yet another payday for filthy scalpers. We can only hope thenthat supply is good enough that demand falls andthose scalpers end up with a whole bunch of extracards they have to liquidate into actual gamers as quickly as possible. Now you might've noticed that one thing we didn'ttalk about today is mining. And the reason for that is that we've set our peace on it already. And we only want to evaluate this product from a gaming perspectiveon its merits for gamers not the political decisionsthat Nvidia makes. So whatever we said before, it's important for you guysto know we don't hate Nvidia and we definitely don't hate this product. It's just that when any companymakes a boneheaded decision Apple, Dell, Intel, AMD doesn't matter who it's our job to call them out. And then by the same token,it's our job to praise them when they get something right. And they got a lotright with the RTX 3060. So that's it, go upgradeyour GTX 1060 or your RX 580, guys, it's time. Just like it's time to tellyou about our sponsor Ting. Thanks to Ting Mobile forsponsoring today's video their new rates make it easier than ever to see how much you can save by switching. [25/02, 8:50 am] Wwww: - China's practice of censoring anything that could beperceived even remotely critical of the Chinese CommunistParty and its policies, or its leadership for thatmatter, is nothing new, so while Steam has been accessible to gamers in China for years, it's existed in a legal gray area and with significant partsof the platform blocked. Well, no more! Valve has finally taken a stand against Chinese censorship of its products by partnering with a Chinese company to make a PresidentXi-approved version of Steam. So thank you, Gaben, and godspeed. You're doing the lord's work now. Today's video is brought toyou by Private Internet Access. Oh, that makes sense. Stay safe and protectedon the internet with PIA. Their VPN service encryptsall your internet traffic and uses a safe, protected IP. Click the link below to learn more. (upbeat music) Before I begin, I hope it's clear I wasbeing sarcastic there. Not about our sponsor, but about my right to speak freely about mygovernment without fear. Allow me to demonstrate. Trudeau? Your falling-down-the-stairs party trick and your skill as a makeup artist are the best things about you. And O'Toole? You don't even have that going for you. Now, I don't even necessarilybelieve those things, but what's cool is I can say them without getting disappeared. So in summary, any support I might appear toshow for government censorship is ironic, satirical, orsome combination of the two. Back to the topic at hand then. Beginning February 2021, gamers in China will have the option of using an official Chinesebeta version of Steam, which raises an interesting question: why would the wanna do that? I mean, clearly very little if any effort is being put into blockingthe existing version of Steam, and given that almost 18% of Steam users selected SimplifiedChinese for their language according to Valve's own data, it's safe to say that a huge portion of their player base is in China. Does the Chinese version, then, offer some kind of compellingadvantage for Chinese users? Let's find out. Got a separate signup process. Does this seem like a lotof personal information for them to collect? Why does Valve need my phone number just to create an account? I mean, I can see for payment information, but I'm not entering acredit card right now. Personal identification number. I gotta have ID to create a Steam account? Yeah, maybe that's normal in China. Actually, we did go through this when we created our Bilibili account. Speaking of which, we'vegot a special build collab with another Bilibili influencer coming, so make sure you're subscribedboth here and on Bilibili. This seems to be my library. I think this is the library. I think that's what those books mean. Okay, so there's DLC for something. Is it the Year of theCow right now? Must be. - [David] Yep.- Okay, yeah. There's a bunch of Year of the Cow stuff. Got that red pocket. Basically, yep, that's Steam all right. But the community features, forum, guides, and Steam Workshop, so basically anywhere that user-generated contentcould be shared, are gone. So it's Steam, just, relatively speaking, devoid of content. Did they really change theSteam logo to red for this? Whenever you see somethinglike that you gotta go, "Who's idea was this?" you know? Which leads us to the samequestion we started with: why does this exist? Well, for a variety of reasons, depending on the party involved. For Valve the answer ispretty straightforward. The allure of the almighty yuan has clearly become toomuch for them to ignore. I mean, Gaben's gotta pay for a sick new crib inNew Zealand somehow. And as for the Chinese government, well, for that we need some context. Most gamers probablyhaven't thought about it, but like music, TV, and film, the Chinese government isn't too happy when Chinese citizens have access to unregulated or unapproved media, and that includes games. So if a game has beenofficially released in China, there are often differences compared to its Western counterpart. Let's look at "World ofWarcraft," for example. The Chinese client has had plenty of model and texture changes to appease the National Press and Publication Administration, most of them centered around removing any sort of gore, blood, or bones. Now, while these things aren'tspecifically banned in China, there are a number of vague regulations that you have to followin order to get your game officially published in China. You can't promote cults or superstition, there's no endangering social morality or national cultural traditions, and there's no opposing opinions allowed on the constitution of thePeople's Republic of China. And that's just to name a few. Now, some of theserules are arguably good, mmm, or at least well-intentioned. Any sort of loot box orgambling system, for example, has to have transparency around drop rates for every available purchase, and minors also have a limit on how much time and moneythey can spend on a game. But when it comes to cracking down on expressing opinionson government policy, it's kinda hard to justifyit with the classic, "Won't someone pleasethink of the children?" So as we alluded to before, Steam and the majority ofcontent available on the platform has been residing in a bit ofa gray area for many years. Currently you can access it despite the Great Firewall of China, but a handful of gameshave been blocked outright and the entire communitydiscussion page is inaccessible. One of the most notabletitles missing from the store is "Battlefield 4," which was banned for discrediting China's national image and threatening national security. You can still see theDLC packs for the game, but the core game itselfis nowhere to be found. Oh, this is cute. An error was encountered. Yes it was. I turned out mypretending-I'm-within-China VPN. Obviously no Steam Workshop as well, so basically it's theChinese version then, just clunkier. The bottom line is basicallyanything with a chance of painting China or theCCP in a negative light is banned, full stop. Nudity, memeing government officials, offering a platform where players could potentially voicedissenting opinions? Banned, banned, and banned. Are you sweating yet? You might need some of these. After years of work and regulation, then, the beta for Chinese Steam, known locally Steam Platform, has launched, and while Valve and their Chinese businesspartner Perfect World has stated that they have no intentions of taking away thecurrent version of Steam, the thing is: that'snot really up to them. Which brings us back finally, then, to what's in this forthe Chinese government. Even if Valve's intention was to keep full-fat Steamavailable within China, the Ministry of Culture can at any moment simply close off access to it with their government firewall. Presumably the only reasonthey haven't done so already is that gaming, likeKorean superstars BTS, is kinda popular in China, and the CCP knows thatturning the heat up slowly is much less alarming tothe frog being boiled. What does this slow and steadyapproach look like then? Well, if you're alreadyusing Steam in China and you want to swap over to the government-approvedversion, good news! You can transfer all of your games. That is, the government-approved games that are in the Steam Platform client. Right now that's roughly50 approved titles, although there are more on the way. So the plan then is tocontinue to add more games so that when the time comes to flip the switch andturn off global Steam, the outrage will be muchmore easily overwhelmed with the usual propaganda toolbox. After all, if I'm a "Dota" enthusiast, what do I care if my neighbor wants to play "Animal Crossing"? I don't play "Animal Crossing." So the bottom line then isthat if I'm a gamer in China and every other overreach by the CCP doesn't already pissme off for some reason, I am pretty mad right about now, not just because I could lose access to potentially hundreds orthousands of dollars' worth of content that I've paid for, but also because of theimpact that this could have on the Chinese indie gamedevelopment industry. It's just beginning toshow what it can achieve, and as we know, extrabureaucracy and approvals almost never catalyze innovation. So let us know in the comments below: if you're a gamer in China, are "CS:GO" and "Dota II"enough to entice you to move to the official Steam Platformapproved by the government, or are you already lookingin investing in a good VPN? We fixed windows 10 microsoft will hate this?
- So here's a situation. You've been concernedabout Windows 10's privacy or lack thereof for a while now, but while you've tried Linux, you just can't make the jump. Maybe some software youneed won't run properly or maybe you're just a fan of Windows other than the privacy problems. What can you do? Why not ameliorate it? Yes, my friends, you can completely fix the problems with Windows 10 and remove the unnecessary garbage that weighs it down all by yourself. So let's see how it's doneand what cost it comes at. But first let's see howmuch our sponsor costs. GlassWire is the toolthat shows you which apps are slowing down yourconnection in real time. It's used by security prosto monitor for malware, block bandwidth wasters, anddetects suspicious activity. Get 25% off using offer codeLinus at the link below. (upbeat music) What does ameliorate mean any way? Well, according to the dictionary, it's a verb meaning to make something bad or unsatisfactory better. And that certainly seems to be the aim for Windows 10 Ameliorated edition, a small project that'sactually been around since all the way back in 2017. Now not a whole lot ofinformation is available surrounding who is actually behind it, but some old links point to Actrons, a 90's kid who specifically calls out technology, social science, philosophy, psychology and neurology, film and anime analysis, and cringe as their topics of interest. Ameliorated editionseems to be an offshoot of their Windows 10 install script, which originally nearly disabled things like Windows Update and made adjustments to Windows Explorer. As newer Windows builds came out though with more deeply integrated telemetry, a more direct approach was necessary to stop Windows from bloody phoning home and getting them all my information. Ameliorated edition straightup removes Windows Update, Cortana, Activation, MicrosoftEdge, Windows Media Player, and all .appx UWPapplications from the install, not disabled, removed, no longer present. What that means is there'sa total size reduction of roughly two gigs. Now of course removing suchdeeply rooted components requires the introduction ofreplacements in certain cases. Killing Cortana, for example, cripples the Start menu andespecially Windows Search. So Classic Shell is used as a replacement. And there's more thatyou'll have to give up too. DirectX 12 may not be fully supported due to Windows Update not being a thing, and of course you're stuckwithout automatic updates. In fact the update processitself is a bit of a bear that requires you todisconnect from the internet, reactivate Windows Update temporarily and so on and so forth. Suffice to say whilethis version of Windows is focused on privacy, it's a little lighter on security. The last the website claims most of the commonlyexploitable applications have been removed anyway, so that point may be lessimportant than you might think. But enough talk. Why don't we take a look for ourselves and see what else we're giving up in the name of improved privacy? The first thing I noticed isthat gone is Windows Mail. Who uses Windows Mail? How crazy do you have to be to not just use a webbrowser for your mail? Like, okay, boomer, enjoy your Outlook. So no Windows Mail, no Windows Store, and no Microsoft Edge. All we've got down here isFile Explorer, that's it. Actually, I'm noticingsome more changes now too. Where's all the dropdownsfor File Explorer? This feels like it's gonnabe very, very different. Also we've got the classic Windows Vista and 7-style Start menu. And of course because there's no Edge, Anthony has helpfully thrown a Firefox shortcut on the desktop. - Actually.- The default is DuckDuckGo, really? - [Anthony] Yes. - [Linus] Is that the Firefox default or is that Windows 10 Ameliorated edition? - No, that's an Ameliorated edition thing. Actually Firefox as well as Thunderbird. - ONLYOFFICE.- What? ONLYOFFICE and VLC media player were all pre-installedby the operating system. - I've never heard of ONLYOFFICE. - [Anthony] Apparentlyit's a fork of LibreOffice. - Ha, it's very Microsoft Office-looking. Let's try and find some tech tips here. Linus Tech Tips. What's my Amazon page? This is a second-hand TITAN X. Okay, we need to update this. Colton! - [Colton] I'm here, what's up? - Oh wow you're there? (man laughing) That was so cool. Can I summon people justby like saying their names? lttstore.com. Hey, this is a sweetshirt by the way, guys. Okay, what else can we try here? Okay, so where's my File dropdown? - This is a modificationto Windows Explorer called I think Old Explorerthat kind of restores the Windows 7 style of Windows Explorer. So it doesn't have thetraditional ribbon bar. It doesn't have any of the other stuff. It's just all basically rewritten. And there's actually aconfig file you can change to customize it yourself. I used it for a little whilejust kind of out of curiosity. It's just a preference thing I feel. But they used it herebecause some of the changes that they made to Windowsalso affected Explorer. So they had to use Old Explorerto kind of patch it up. - Well, I can tell younow there's only one thing that I would care aboutthem fixing and that's, if I search for somethingand I go to this folder, when I click up folder, you bastards! That's not what I want. I want it to go up a folder. If I want it to go backto the previous page, I would press Back. Up folder means up one folderin the directory structure. So this looks like the horrible Windows 10-type Settings menu except there's even less stuff in here. Like what's up with that? - [Anthony] Well, a lot of it is stuff that was tied in withthat telemetry stuff, so Windows Updates, gaminglike the Xbox stuff, that was tied in with thetelemetry and the phoning home. So pretty much anything that qualifies withthat would also be cut. - Can I even set a screensaver? - [Anthony] I think so. It's under display, isn't it? - I don't know, is it? Wait, here it is, here itis, I got it, I got it. So you can't search for it. I guess that would probably be because they gutted theregular search as well. - [Anthony] Yeah, without Cortana, then Windows Search kind of just dies. - Ha, I actually didn't knowthat this bubble screensaver was still built into Windows. This is a Windows Vistaclassic right here. This was so cool at the time. Ooh, 3D acceleration on the desktop! Now it looks kind of faked actually. I just wanna watch these bubbles for days. - We've evolved past screensavers at this point as a species. - [Linus] This is weird too. Windows tab doesn't cycle through things for whatever reason. All tab does but why doesn't Windows tab? Okay, well that's cool. I guess that's fine. - I haven't really done any benchmarking. - Okay.- But it does seem to be a lot snappier than it should like a standard Windows10 install would be. - I mean the Start menusure opens right away which is pretty nice. But I mean how bad is this search? So let's search for like Counterstrike. That's rough. Not being able to find something that is literally a shortcuton the desktop is terrible. No worse than the builtinone in Windows 10 mind you. - I think it is possible to set the search folders for a Classic Shell or I guess it's called Open Shell now. So if you were toright-click on the Start menu and go to Settings, you can kind of configureeverything there, but by default I thinkit's not set up to do that. It's just for the Start menu itself. - [Linus] Got it, okay. Search the internet, search programs andsettings, search files. It is set to search everything, sir. - Oh. Well, I've got no excuses for it then. - [Linus] So what else can we try here? I mean, like, a game will run fine, right? Like let's play Doom. - [Anthony] I mean, Doom should run. - There's a defaultpassword, why would that be? - Because the user account that you're logged into rightnow is straight up a user. It's not an administrator. - Why? - You're no longer gettingthe security patches. - Right. - Most security vulnerabilities happen because users are administrators. - Right, and there'sreally no compelling reason to be an administrator outsideof just installing programs. And if you know theadministrative password, then you can just put it inanytime you need to do that kind of like you would on a Mac. - Yeah. - I should just switch to Mac. Between Spotlight, andjust, Finder wasn't so bad. I'd consider it. - There's alternatives you can get. Path Finder is one. - [Linus] Okay. - It's paid software though butit's actually pretty decent. - Why is everything paid on Mac? - Yeah. - Because you can affordit, you bought a Mac. Alright, yeah, we're runningat like 90 FPS or whatever. - [Anthony] Yeah, it's totally fine. - [Linus] Ultra-Nightmare. Take that monsters. - [Anthony] Why don't youtry a DirectX 12 game? - Oh, well, I guess that'sprobably not gonna work then hey. Okay, what's the-- - [Anthony] It might. I've got a shot out ofthe Tomb Raider on there. - Oh yeah, that'll do it. Oh, weird, there's no system tray pop-up. - That might just be anartifact of Classic Shell. I'm not entirely sure. It's been a hot minutebut it could be also be that we don't have anylike hidden icons also. - I can't find any way to hide them. I'm in the Settings now and it's just, nope, you just relocate them. Even the relocation animationsare slightly different. So you might be right. It might just be a Classic Shell thing. Let's play some Shadow ofthe Tomb Raider, DirectX 12. Here we go boys. Why would Windows Update affect that? - Apparently there'sextensions to DirectX 12 that come down from WindowsUpdate from time to time. So the idea is if you've got a game that uses an extensionthat you don't have, then DirectX 12 just won't work properly. - Well, Shadow of the TombRaider is a bit of an older game and it seems to be workingproperly at least in the menu which is rendered in engine, so that would lead me tobelieve that it's gonna run. Okay. So officially DirectX 12 is a no-go, but unofficially if you tryit on a game-by-game basis, it might actually work just fine then. - [Anthony] Yeah. - You're not supposed tostand in here but I like it. New Task Manager is here. That's nice to see. Got your GPU usage andall that good stuff, although I don't see temps in here yet. So this is like at leastone iteration back. - It's actually based on Windows 10 1903. - Got it. - It should be possibleto do it with 1909, but the official images, well, official images are 1903. Okay, you might notice thenon the bottom right corner that you've got an internetassist connected icon. - Oh, I do. - [Anthony] Yes and that's-- - [Linus] That's becauseWindows can't know that I have an internet connection. - [Anthony] Right, because it'snot phoning home, it can't. - Got it. - So it only knows that youhave local connectivity. - Interesting. So even though all the telemetry stuff has supposedly been removed, we still actually need to fool Windows into thinking that it hasno reason to even use it, because I have no internet connection. - Yeah. - [Linus] Oh, CreativeCloud probably won't know I have an internet connection either. - [Anthony] Yeah. - Oh, I bet there's gonna be lots of stuff that kind of glitches out because it thinks you haveno internet connection. - 'Cause they can't ping their server. They can't phone home. - So it turns off telemetryfor other applications as well. - I think Adobe is oneof those applications that hooks into Windows's API for that, and the API itself has been removed. - I opened up Creative Cloud desktop. It goes you got no internetconnection, I can't do stuff. By the way we've got anew version available. Go ahead and update. Let's see if it gets it. Let's see if you guys get awater bottle on lttstore.com. Okay, this is not gonna finish. This has been sitting here forever now. - I take back everything I said about quality Adobe software. - [Linus] Okay, so with that closed out, we've got svchost, like task manager. Wow, there's reallynot a lot in here then. - Yeah, and in keeping with the spirit of the operating system, I used NVCleanstall to installthe NVIDIA driver as well. So we only have the bareminimum for that as well. - Oh, I guess that explainswhy it just feels so snappy. Like you know how sometimeseven on a fast machine, you'll go to open localdisk C and it'll take like 10 or 15 seconds for no apparent reason. - Yeah, 'cause it's gotta like update some log in the background that's gotta go off- Exactly. - To Microsoft and all that kind of crap. It makes you wonder how much stuff is actually just kinda caked on in there in the like vanilla version of Windows. - No kidding, like evenwhen it does need a second to open up and populate a directory list, it's a second, not 10 seconds. - Yeah, accessing the vault or any of our otherservers usually takes like. - A long time. This is great though. Like I'm in bench den rightnow and it's responsive enough considering that it'srunning on spinning rust and running over a gigabit connection. - Yeah. - [Linus] Hey, MS Paint is still here. - [Anthony] MS Paint is not spyware. - I knew it, I knew youwere good all along. This is pretty cool. You get all the same benefits that you would from anofficially available slimmed down version of Windowslike an embedded version which we've actually talked about before when we did a video on Windows 9, plus more since all thetelemetry is stripped out. But legally speaking, this is all something ofa gray area so to speak. Now according to the website, the project is perfectly legal based on EU Directive 2009/24 which they say gives them a pass on interoperability grounds by downloading images withtelemetry, including activation, removed from the website itself, though you are essentiallycommitting piracy. However, it is possible to do this legally if you modify a Windowsimage for yourself, and they've got full documentation on the process availablealong with a repository of open source scripts that they use. So supposedly you withyour Windows license and a download of Windows 10 1909 should be able to do it for yourself, although the prebuilt imagesare all based on 1903. Legality aside, the utilityof a Windows image like this is pretty great for someonewho's looking to run it in a VM on a Linux machine for example. For everyday use, I don't know. If you don't need some of the things that we found didn't work quite right, and if you don't mindjumping through some hoops whenever you wanna update or run something that needs administrative permissions, then sure, otherwise, honestly, our better recommendations are to just give in and run Windows or just run Linux if you wantprivacy without the hassle. just how bad is mixing memory
(dramatic music) - Wait a second. Everyone knows it's bad tomix and match your memory. But how bad is it? I mean, if you found a really sweet deal to double up the RAM and your gaming rig, would you be such an evil personif you pulled the trigger? What if the RAM that's in your system isn't available anymore? Are you stuck with it forever? Let's find out. After we find out justhow smoothly Linus here is gonna segue to his sponsor. With GlassWire you caninstantly see your current and past network activity, detect malware, and block badly behaving appson your PC or Android device. Use offer code LINUS toget 25% off GlassWire at the link down below. (upbeat music) We never wanna feed youmisinformation or myths, particularly if it causes you to miss out on a free or cheap upgrade. So we took five differentmemory sets from our inventory, rated for various speeds and latencies, throw them on an AMD test bench with a Ryzen 5 3600X and2060 Super, and went to town, checking configuration after configuration after configuration after... Well, you get the point. And after many grueling hoursof mind-numbing benchmarks, we're here to give youthe exciting results. Guess what? It barely matters. Or at least, it sometimes barely matters. We created a baseline for reference using two eight gig modulesclocked at 3,200 megahertz with primary timings of 6-18-18-36. We ran our benchmarks, took notes, and then started swappingout modules one by one. And you might be as surprisedas we were to find out that, honestly, for the most part, with two sticks you canget away with quite a lot as long as you're willingto tweak some values here and there in the system BIOS. If you don't overclockyour memory subsystem. And I'm talking eitherwith XMP or manually, RAM compatibility withDDR4 has come a long way to the point where basicallyit just freakin' works. Faster modules will generallyhave no issues clocking down and running steady with the slower ones, especially if they'reunder four gigahertz. And our performancemeasurements demonstrate this with pretty much all of our configurations within the run-to-runvariants of our tests. But the enthusiasts among you will know that if you wanna get themost out of a modern system, increasing your memoryspeed is really important. What if we take thenhalf of our reference kit and half of a slower kitand run them in dual-channel at the reference kit'sfrequency of 3,200 megahertz? Our slow kit here is timedpretty similarly, 16-18-18-35. But the traditional rule of thumb is that for every speed bin bump, you would expect to alsoraise your CAS latency by one. I am really not sureif this is gonna work. Crazily enough, though, theresults look pretty good. Almost as good as our RAM styleTech Scarf on LTTStore.com. And the benchmarks look identical. So what we've managed to showhere is that if you get lucky and you're mismatched RAMwill run at your target speed, there's unlikely to be anyperformance difference. But remember how I promisedwe'd find some differences? What happens if we up the ante, and mix our 2,666 with ourhigh-speed 4,000 megahertz kit? Well, the reason DDR4 4,000costs more than this stuff is that it's been sorted orbinned by the manufacturer according to their internalperformance targets. Now, sometimes you get lucky and this puppy'll overoverclock to the moon, but other times, you get ourlittle friend, Mr. 2,666 here. He managed to be compatiblewith the big, bad, extreme gaming modules, butnot at their rated speed, where the system failedto even power on properly. Things broke down even further when we tried to populatemore than two DIMM slots. The thing is the more modules you install the greater the load on your CPU's integrated memory controller. This didn't cause anyperformance issues per se, as long as we could getthe RAM all running, but it did cause some flakyand undesirable behavior. For example, when we populatedthree slots with a mixture of our reference and slow modules, the system would post and benchat 3,200 speeds just fine, at the start, but here's the thing. AMD's Ryzen processors havea feature called flex mode that allows two modulesto run in dual-channel, with a third running in single-channel. That's great for gettingmaximum performance out of a non-ideal configuration, but you've gotta be very careful how you populate your slots. As soon as we put our 2666module in the B1 slot, it got real unhappy, spittingout memory error codes and getting stuck in a restart loop until we reset the CMOS anddialed it all back to 2,666. As for populating all four DIMM slots and getting the system to work? That was no easy feat, with only a single configuration posting, and only when we toned it all down to meet at 3,200 megahertz. That was below our highest rated modules 3,400 megahertz speed. Funnily enough, though, we tried back to this configuration later, and despite using the same BIOS settings with the same sticks in the same slots, it actually failed to postproperly during round two. Which goes to show that while your friend might have no troublerunning a poop mix of memory with no performance penalty, you can't count on the same result. And here's the big problem with that. Two mixed modules was pretty much fine, but most people aren't mixing memory at the time that they buytheir brand new system. It's when they're upgrading down the line and trying to max out an older system, that these kinds of questions come up. So the chance that mixing and matching will result in unpredictability when you're maxing out yoursystem and filling all the slots is just too high to ignore. Speaking of unpredictable, get subscribed so you don'tmiss the next installment in our crazy Intel home upgrade series. Andy is doing a man-cave.(clicking tongue) Back to mixing memory though. Is there anything that youcan do to improve your odds? Well, yeah, actually. For starters, buying an upgrade that is rated for the samespeed and primary timings will help your chances. And so will finding amodule that was built using dies from the same manufacturer. And when I say manufacturer,I'm not talking G.Skill or Corsair or Kingston, I'mtalking about the actual chips that are soldered to the module. So if you've got a modulehere with Samsung B-dies, good for you, by the way, those are nice. Try to get more of the same, even if they have a differentlogo on the heat spreader. "But, Linus," you might ask, "what about different capacities? "Can I pair up similarly specced "eight gig and 16 gig modules "and finally join team dual-channel?" Yes, you can. It's called asynchronous dual-channel. So we also ran benchmarks withdifferent capacity modules of similar speeds and not onlydid it all register properly but as long as your workloaddoesn't exceed the capacity of the smallest module you shouldn't noticeany performance impact With that said, we still cannot in goodconscience recommend going out, buying whatever set of modules is on sale, rubbing them together for good luck, and throwing them at your rig. Both the best and theworst thing about PC gaming is that every system is wildlydifferent from the next. To the point where whatworks for your friend, or for us today, might not work for you. You might hit the silicon lottery and get something thatoverclocks just fine and has perfect compatibility, or you might get something that runs at exactly its rated speedand not a hertz more! Worse yet, you might landyourself in a restart loop or even run intounpredictable blue screens on a rig that otherwiseseems to be working fine. So we would strongly recommend if you're upgrading your memory flip your current moduleson Facebook Marketplace or eBay or something andbuy matching replacements. If however, you've got thespare parts lying around and you wanna see if you cangive yourself an easy upgrade with minimal or no performance loss, and you're not afraid of a little bit of fine-tuning in theevent of some crashing, the good news is that it can work. So please do some of your own testing and let us know in the comments below just how far you were able topush your mismatched hardware. Who knows, maybe you've had access to a free upgrade this whole time. Just like I upgraded my segueto this one from our sponsor, Micro Center. the herd mentality pc
- You wanna build your own DIY computer and you find yourself on newegg.com, who sponsored this video, by the way. Overwhelmed by all thechoices and all the acronyms. You got your NVMEs, yougot your LGAs, your PCIs. What does it all even mean? Do you painstakingly research? Which parts are the best? No my friends, not today. Today you let the fates decide. Or more accurately the sortby Best Rating feature. Yes my friends, for today's machine, we are gonna be flyingabsolutely blindfolded, simply ordering whateverit is on newegg.com that has the highest egg rating, throwing it all together and seeing what kind of computer we end up with. And I can tell you some of thechoices are probably not ones that I would have defaulted to. (upbeat music) First up, we've got theRyzen 7 3700 X from AMD. It's an eight core, 16 threadprocessor, and its just $300. This puppy is a multitasking powerhouse able to plow through thelatest games and your renders or animations or whateverelse it is that you like to do on the side. It has five out of five eggswith 3,300 reviews on Newegg with some of the highlightsbeing good performance and the stock cooler is good. And if this chip doesn'tconvince you to dump Intel, you must be dead. What does that even mean? We won't actually be usingthe stock cooler though. So let's focus on the bottom line here. Pros: just what I wanted, even more. Cons: Just too much power. Overall review: Perfect product. All right. Fair enough. We'll have to see whatRyzen 5000 has to say about the perfect Ryzen 3000. On that subject one of the best things about AMD's platform right now is the forward and backwards compatibility of their chip sets. So this motherboard righthere, the MSI Meg X570 ACE, not only has featuresthat are useful today, like 2.5 Gig ethernet andwifi 6 as well as solid VRMs for overclocking but thecapability to upgrade it with a Ryzen 5000 seriesCPU down the line. Now motherboards tendto be a little bit more on the finicky side than CPUs. So our highest ratedmotherboard was actually just four eggs out offive with 176 reviews. In spite of the fact thatthis is a $360 board. Let's go ahead and throw our CPU in there. A little something like that. That's customer satisfaction right there. That's what it looks like. The herd mentality PC isgoing really well here so far. For memory we ended up witha 16 Gig kit of 3200 MHZ, CL 16 RGB memory fromnone other than G skill. The general consensus herewith four out of five eggs and 2,494 reviews was that the pros are that they are highly compatiblewith most boards out there. And one of the few 3,200 MHZ kits that happens to be on the QBLor the Qualified Vendor List for lots of boards with the cons being that it has ignored my advances, will not make me a sandwich and does not run hotenough to warm my coffee. Those are some pretty small downsides. The highlighted overall review was, has run continuously andflawlessly in my system for about half a year now. And also the RGB works and looks great. Here's what I didn't see coming. When I think boot SSD, maybeI bought into the hype. I tend to think more like, you know, the guys that market cutting edge features like PCI express gen four, like Corsair or the guys that focusalmost exclusively on SSDs, like a Samsung or a micron, but Intel actually cameout on top with their 660P. This right here is a 1TB drive that boasts 1800MHZ persecond reads and writes with QLC NAND. So not exactly a topperformer, but at 130 bucks, it's reasonably priced for a terabyte of reasonably fast storage and it's got five eggs out offive with almost 900 reviews. Advantages for this productinclude things like, fast, reliable, and easy to install. While one of the biggestcomplaints about it was that the user no longer had enough time to go get a glass of water while their system bootedleading to dehydration. So it could be dangerousto use one of these SSDs, but your computer will run just fine. Maybe the cooler I'llend up being something I don't agree with, I'm just kidding. The community knows notNoctua knows what's up. So highlights of theNH-U12S are just that it is, a no-nonsense coolerthat gets the job done. It has good enough performance while being absolutely silent. If you can figure yourbios to a silent mode. And of course it comeswith not to as legendary Sekou firm mounting system, which I am personally a big old fan of. While we work on updatingthe compatibility of this older unit of this cooler, seems like a good time to talk about one of the patterns thatI've noticed emerging in the hardware choicesthat we've looked at today. The SSD had a five-year warranty, the cooler has a six-year warranty and Noctua has an outstanding reputation for providing a mountingbrackets and adapters that customers need downthe line for their products. And this Seasonic PowerSupply has a 10-year warranty. It seems like, by large, the herd mentality computer is considering thingsthat a hardware reviewer might not normally, like the long-term supportthat comes with the product, as opposed to just theprice to performance ratio. For the finishing touch,we throw on our fan and plugged the fan cableinto the CPU fan header right there on the motherboard. Back over to the Power Supply. We didn't strictly speakingneed a 750 Watt Power Supply, but I also don't disagree with the Newegg Community's choice here. This is the Seasonic focused GX-750. It's got 80 plus goldcertification, it's fully modular, it's quiet and evenincludes a hybrid mode, where the fan will turn offentirely under very light loads, and it's going to have alittle bit of growing room for you in the future. The main pros were, Hey, well, I didn't need a 750 Watt Power Supply, but it was the same priceas the 650, so why not? With one of the main cons being, an out-of-date user manual? Oh, we should have a look at that. That tells me not to use it inthe bathtub in 20 languages, but not how the fan control button works. Oh, Lordy. Okay. Well, Oh yeah, no, it doesn'tsay which toggle is right. I think out is actuallyhybrid mode, which is weird. Don't quote me on that though. A separate manual forthat now. Yes, yes, yes. Out an Audi belly button is hybrid build. Bringing us finally toprobably the funkiest choice in our viewers choice PC here. This is the Cooler Master HAF XB Evo and it's advertised as like a land box slash I think they also say it's like good as a test bench or something. Do they actually say that?Or is that your thing? - [Nicholas] That in the marketing. - It's in the marketing for it. Huh? Okay. What's funny about this isthat even though I don't recall ever having seen one ofthese out in the wild, like at a land party or anything, it has a five out of fiveegg rating with get this, 8,562 reviews as of the timeof recording this video. I mean, that is shocking. The main pros for this guy or that it is surprisingly spacious with a well thought outdesign in most regards. And that really is all youcan ask for a case, Isn't it? Six thumbs screws at the back, give us pretty much allthe access that we need to the inside of the chassis for building. And I can actually see howthis would appeal to people even though I haven'tset eyes on this thing in years and years. And that was probably aprevious revision of the case. All the accessories areincluded in this little hard drive shaped-cardboard box. And natively has supportfor up to four hard drives with two of them being hot swaps really is pretty easy to work in. Get our front panel cables out of the way and plug in front USB three. You know what's another interesting trend is the fact that RGB lighting seems to be a complete non-factor when it comes to people's purchase satisfaction, all of the three items thatdo have any RGB lighting, only the Ram is available in an identical, but non RGB configuration. So it seems like for the most part, people are just picking whateveris great bang for the buck with a completeindifference towards whether it has RGB or not. Even the Ram. I wouldn't read too much intoit because a lot of the time what memory people buy is more down to what on promo this week as opposed to what theyactually think is the best. Although there were somecomplaints about not two as Brown and tan color scheme. People really wanted a different though, there is a black one for $10 more. So apparently it justdoesn't matter that much. You know I made a coupleoffhand comments before about how old this case design is, but like this really dates it, it still has one of thoseAC97 offshoot dongle things on the front panel, audio connection. Who's putting a motherboard old enough with the cooler master, revise your is here. Hooking up the front panel connectors now, this is not my best cableand management, but whatever, whoever wins this thing can fix it for me. Oh yeah, I don't thinkI actually mentioned that part of the Neweggsponsorship for this video is that we going to begiving away this computer. Fun, right? That's one of the nicest things about modular Power Supply cables is you can kind of run them whenever and whichever direction you want. So I'm running them overto the motherboard first then I will plug in the Power Supply end once I put the PSU in down here. Got a couple of eight pins. Man, this is easy to get atcompared to a typical tower case where all the cable managementroom is kind of like behind the motherboard trayin this tiny little channel. We are gonna have a hard drive so I'm gonna go ahead andgrab a SATA cable here and then do what the, Hey, why don't we throw it inthe old hot swap thing? So that's Oh, that's kind ofa kludgy approach to that. They've just got this female connector, like soldered on to an exposed PCB there. Okay. The most amazing part ishow much of a difference all these little conveniences make to how long it takes to complete a build. Like here we are, we are almostdone ladies and gentlemen. We are wiring up the Power Supply. We're going to screw it back in, throw the graphics cardin and we're close. We settled on the WesternDigital 4TB, WD 405SZBX, because it's got four out offive eggs and 1500 reviews and 150 bucks is not a lot of money for a whack ton of storage space. It's super easy to installwith tool less Mount. You just got to lineup the thing in Boober and then you put thepokies and the Holies there and just kind of dolike that kind of thing until it's kind of inthere, like it should be and then you take the wholesled, slide it in there. Oh, Oh, it's falling apart. Can you go in there? What the, Oh, stop. Why are these getting caught? They're not even sticking out. Oh, it's under the drive now just go in. It's caught again. What the heck is it caught on? Okay, well it's there now. This is a perfect example of how going by whatever has the best, and or the most reviewscan be a great strategy, but it can also mean thatyou're stuck with sorta out of date information, because the thing about theRTX 2000 series is awkward. It's kind of been replaced at this point, but because the RTX 3000 seriesis so supply constrained, well, nobody has them to leave a bunch ofpositive reviews about it. So it's not like we'regetting a bad product here in the form of the RTX 2070super twin frozen Gaming X from MSI. It's just that we're notgetting the most current one. Removed before gaming, zerofroze or fan not spinning, don't worry this card runs in silent mode, under low load situations. Nice. That's fun. One of the cons of this cardis that it is big, real big, but one of the pros isthat MSI actually went out of their way to includea support bracket with it. How fun is that? Got a whole like bracketexperience to help with that sag. Nothing against them assign Nicholas, but I'm a little curiousas to how exactly we got so many of their products. What did you use as a tie breaker if you had two five-eggs products? - [Nicholas] Basicallythe number of reviews. - Got it. So we took whateverwas the bigger seller and said, okay, well thisis a greater sample size. So it's more statistically significant. I have never installed a graphics card with a support bracket like that before and it's totallyunnecessary in this chassis because the graphics cardactually just sits like this. There is no sag, but I kindof want to do it anyway. So we're gonna do it. Come on, sometimes you justgot to do stuff for fun, you know? - [Girl] Hey daddy. - Yes. My darling girl. - [Girl] Can I have Apples please? - You would like apples. Well, we're more of a PC house. - [Girl] What are you playing? - What am I playing? I'm not playing anything my love I'm building a computer. - [Girl] Can I help please? - Actually. Yes. you can help if you'd like, would you like to help? - Yes.- Okay, come here. Fun. This is something Ididn't actually notice before. These handles are super handy if you want to move the systemaround, all right, go ahead. One there and one there, my darling, (instrumental music) This might take a while. Let's go get our peripherals so we can fire up some games on here. It posted immediately. Let's go ahead and tryXMP and it's only 3800MHZ. It should be okay. Don't read too much intothe monitor or peripherals. These were just things yougrabbed from the office, not the top rated onesor anything like that. Now this game is violent, you can't watch this Tylan. All right, We're runningsome dual maternal at 1080P at what? Just shy of 300 FPS, which actually makes moresense than you might think with this 360 Hertz monitor. Nice and clean obviously cozit's like little butter smooth. I mean, that doesn't change that I missed a lot of the shotsI take, but minor details. Right, right, right, right. See you later. Oh, I'm gonna die. Oh, I died. That's okay. The main point was, does the system work? Yes it does and doesthe review system work? Actually it kind of seems like it does without any knowledge of parts, other than making sure thatour CPU and motherboard were compatible. All we had to do is takethe top reviewed products and we ended up with what is not only a very competent gaming rig, but even one with greatcooling and silent operation, and it's a pretty great value. And the best part is, thanksto Newegg sponsorship. You don't even have to payfor it at all if you win it. We're back at the office and guess what? Instead of the last genRTX 2000 series card, Newegg asked us to upgrade oursystem with a new EVGA 3080X3 that they sent over. I think Newegg must be goingfor a five-egg rating here, because check this out. They also sent anothercard and EVGA 3090 FTW3 for us to give away. No, not for you. So enter below for a chanceto win this PC with a 3080, or a 3090 FTW3 and afterwards, go check out Newegg's PC Builder which helps you choose compatibleparts for your next build and upload your builds to Neweggshowcase to show them off. It's that time of year guysNewegg is having Black Friday deals all month long, including a Black Fridayprice protection program from November 1st to November 22nd. So you can find links to all of this in the video description. If you guys enjoyed this videoand you weren't lucky enough to win this, maybe check outthe ruthless economy build, cause you don't have tospend this much to get a, well functional gaming MIG, gaming MIG? Gaming, PC gaming machine rig. Whatever just close the video.

if pixar made robot-clicbot robot
(upbeat music) (chuckles) - You all remember thegreat Jibo massacre of 2017, and so do we. Actually I'm pretty sure they blamed us for sinking their company. So when Keyi reached outto sponsor this video about their ClicBot educational robot, my eyebrows just aboutraised right off my head. But we wouldn't be making this video, if the ClicBot was yetanother colossal waste of money that barely does anything. So let's unleash the crackings on it, and see what our newestfamily member can do. (upbeat music) This cute, modular robotfrom Keyi is the product of a successful Kickstarterfunded back in February of 2020. With backers being able to pledge anywhere from $299 for the early bird starter kit, to $699 for the early bird maker kit with plenty of options in between. You can build basically anything you want with all the pieces in the kit, but they have some suggested ones. So the two main ones are BIC, and BAC. So BAC is kind of like a tall skinny boy moves around, and then BIC has wheels. So that's why we've actuallygot wheels included in our kit. So which one do you guyswant to build, BIC or BAC? - BIC- BIC please - BIC - I had kind of planned forus to do the other one first. Can you work with me on this? - Yeah-- Okay - We'll do back first? - Yeah- Okay - Some of the moreadvanced features are gonna be a little complicatedfor a younger audience, but they figure anyone ages eight and up can probably assemble it. So, why don't we get you totake a crack at the assembly? We're going to start with the head and wait a second my boy. Yeah, you can put ittogether any way you want, but we're going to startby not doing a random one. We're going to start with BAC. So that's your next piece. So we got this one. - And now we need another one of them. - That's right. Okay. Have you figured outhow to put it together my boy? - I have. - Did you figure outhow to put it together? So this comes off. Okay. You're gonna put that one together. - Suction cup. - Yeah. So I guess you cansuction it under something, Are there more pieces? Cause it looks like we've got a foot here. Oh my goodness. Two suction cups? Okay. Ah, okay. I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna do it. Okay. Hi. Wow. It's got lights on it. Whoa. Has mount already beenstickied on the desk, yeah? (Robot whizzing) There's a few things you can do, so you can try tickling BAC's head. (Giggles) Okay. (Laughs) Does someone want totry to cover backside? - Me please. - Okay. Go for it. - How? - With your hands. You gotta try. (Robot whizzes) (Laughs) There's a few things we can do here. There's BAC's Playbox. Wave left or right about 10 centimeters in front of BAC to select the answer before the countdown ends. Okay. The fastest bird is anostrich or a, a what? - Castorosaurus. - I have no idea. So far then it actuallydoes seem pretty Jibo like, but that's okay. We're coming to the, butwait, there's more moment. We got the full kit which still costs lessthan a Jibo by the way. And can be used to build anynumber of different robots. Ones that have been pre-tested by Keyi, or the community, or your own creations. So why don't we buildthe other starter robot and try some of the other functionality. The instructions arehere in the main menu. You can see there's all thisstuff in here and meet friends, update, settings. So this is a whole, and then there's yourconnection settings here. So let's go right back to calibrate. Please connect as follows. Applebee's blah blah blah. Alright, here we go, ready? So I need one of those. That's kind of cool. It just gives you like the next step. (Robot whizzes) They don't even need allthe robot functionality to have fun with this stuff apparently. Wait, we're building BAC again. What the heck? Well, I guess we can watch BAC dance now. That's why they call himBAC cause he comes back. Get it? That's how I can tell the difference between staff that Ipay and my own children. Touchscreen could be a little, sensitivity could be tweaked a little. There's some constructivefeedback for the Keyi team. There we go. Dance. Okay, here we go. Five, four, three, two, one. (Bouncy rap music) Okay. That was dance mode. We want to get into building BIC mode. So there you go. We've got BIC selected in the menu. We're going to click that, and it says remove all the flashy modules. Okay. Guys, tear offall the flashing ones. Rip it apart. Kill him. (Giggles) So now do you see theinstructions on the screen? - Yeah. - So you gotta do that. All right, you got it? There we go. - Anyone can balance like that. - Okay. Keep it standingon a flat surface. Oh wow. It really does balance itself. Segway style. That's pretty cool. Oh. (Smooth jazz music) What? No, what? (Giggles) - No, you're not a person. - I'm pretty sure I'm a person. So we're gonna try oneof the ones in like, the community thing. Oh, wrong module position. Gosh. Darn it. I'll take it off. I got it wrong again? - The other side. You've got to put it onthe other side of the hand. - Ooh. Well, all right smarty pants, why don't you do it then? Here we go. That's kind of cool. Look at this. It's got like a 3D view. If you have trouble kindof lining things up. Now we need kind oflike a butt tail thing. There we go. Ah, okay. I need another sphere. More sphere. - I don't have one. - Yes you do. You have three. What the heck are we even making? [Man] A Race car. - A Race car. Okay. Now we need wheels kids. Wheel me. Okay. So there's like apressure sensitive foot that goes in here. Okay. Wrong logical position. Why does it need a foot? Okay. Where's my next wheel? What? This is a race car. Okay. You know what? Sure. Fine. Oh, we're doing awesome nowI'm getting a hang of this. All right I need anothersphere. Sphere me. (Momentary shrieking) You might need some helpfrom your big brother. Oh wow. Good job. So now what we can do is we can use the phoneapp to drive it around. Select reset, to adjust posture. Yeah. Oh, hi. Okay. You guys want to try the racer? - Yes please. - All right. Me too. - How fast does it go? - Oh, wow, okay. Oh, that's pretty cool. (Robot whizzing) All right. Who wants to try it? - Me please. - Put your thumb onthe, yeah, there you go. Okay. You gotta go adifferent direction now. Back. See? And forward. Ah, you gotta go get Andy. Okay. You try it. You press the other mode. So now what does it do? (Robot whizzing) (Chuckles) Now what's cool, is thatif you build your own, you can actually program little animations and stuff like that by settingup what are essentially key frames manually andthen playing them back. So you could have it go get something, or go back in front-okay hold on, hold on. Okay. So let's see what it's doing. Okay. So, like spins like this. (Laughs) Now, it does have these little locks. If you have a model that's kind of top heavy here something. Once you're familiarwith the motion control, you can also go in andcreate your own AI programs for ClicBot with the simple graphical user interface that allowsanyone to visually script to their heart's content. The community is alsoconstantly uploading new videos showcasing just what ClicBot can do. And with a helpful onlinecommunity of like-minded makers, you can be sure to find solutions online to problems you might encounterwhen trying to program or put together, ClicBot yourself. They're also a great source of inspiration if you're not sure where to start, or where to go next inyour bot building journey. The lack of ability toconnect it to a terminal, isn't the only blemish. You're limited to 2.4 gigahertz wifi, there aren't any airlinesfor failing code, and the app did have tobe reset a few times to fix some instances of freezing. However, Keyi's YouTube channel has a lot of tutorials for beginners, and ClicBot is alreadygetting firmer updates, so we would expect some ofthese bugs to disappear, or at least lessen in the future. This also leaves room fornew features to be added on top of the 200 plus interactions it can already perform. Aww poor you. Wow. It really does looklike a wounded animal. It runs for about twohours between charges making it a pretty fun gift for the tech savvy kid in your life, or for anyone who's lookingto relive their childhood dream of having a robotic friend, or well, really any friend. Thank you for watching. Thanks Keyi for sponsoring this video. If your kids are stilltoo young for the ClicBot, make sure to check out ourABCs of gaming board book at lttstar.com, totally unbiased review. How's the ABC's of gaming? Is it a good book? Thanks for that. If you're looking for anothervideo to watch right now, how about our review of Jibo. It's basically, well, it tried to be this, but it was so much less than this, but it does twerk.

the most average gaming PC
- You know, the script calls for me to say this isn't running verywell, but it's fine. We love building, benchmarking, and gaming on the kinds of showcaseone-percenter machines that most people can only ever dream of, but as much fun as that is, the vast majority of those rigs actually get torn down forreuse in future videos, because even for us, dailydriving that kind of hardware, it's just not cost-effective or practical. It also kinda gives PC gaming a bad image as something that onlythe elite can afford, when that couldn't befarther from the truth. We've built competentesports gaming machines at great prices and even forunder $100 on this channel, and you can too if you'rewilling to make some compromises. Of course, the kinds of machines thatthe average gamer is running are somewhere between potatoand dream battle station. How do we know this? Well, the monthly Steam hardware survey, which tells us exactly which PC gaming hardwareis the most popular. So with its help we built the most populargaming PC on the planet and we're gonna show you guys exactly how much it wouldcost you to build it and what kind ofperformance you can expect. And today's video isbrought to you by Corsair. The Corsair iCUE 5000X RGBtempered glass smart case features their RapidRoutecable management system, smart RGB out of the box, and more. Check it out at the link down below. (upbeat music) That's right, we've gone one: a quad-core Core i7 4770K. According to the Steam hardware survey, 42.94% of you are rockingfour-core processors, with 18.03% of you runninga hyperthreaded model like this one between 3.3and 3.69 gigahertz, nice. It turns out then that as much as we alllove Ryzen right now, AMD couldn't possibly even manufacture enough of these things to put a dent in Intel's years of dominance, and as of January 2021, Team Blue still owns72% of the install base. Now, that number is shifting, and fast. Intel is down almost 10% since December, but it's gonna take time. Since motherboard choiceshouldn't impact performance much, we grabbed a Z87I-Deluxe from Asus that was lying around on a shelf. This combo should put us in the top range of average CPU performanceaccording to the survey. It was important for us to find something with hyperthreading since just shy of 20% ofyou apparently do have it. It's kind of amazing how long this chip has kept its relevance. And we actually checked out some reviews on Newegg and PCPartPickerleading up to this video, and it's mostly super positive. Like, even as recentlyas a couple of years ago. In the interest of strictly adhering to the specs in the Steam hardware survey, we're unfortunately gonnabe running this puppy at stock speed. But lots of users of this CPU report running it at 4.2, 4.3, or even 4.4 gigahertz for years at a time. That's not too shabby for a CPU that's older than our newsocial media coordinator. Memory was a surprising one for me. The average gamer out there,a whopping 43.85% of you, is running 16 gigs of system memory. Not bad! So we picked up two 8-gig sticks of good, old-fashioned DDR3 1866. This is actually a greatmiddle ground today. You can still squeeze by with 8 gigs, but most triple-A games arerecommending 16 gigs or more and a lot of other desktop applications can also benefit from more RAM. We're gonna go ahead and assume that you guys are running yourmemory in dual-channel mode and install it that way. You are running indual-channel mode, right? Now, a few things thesurvey doesn't mention include the case, power supply, cooler, and other peripherals, so we went with some Amazon bestsellers that I'm sure most of you will recognize. We've got the NZXT H510, a Hyper 212 EVO V2, and a Corsair CX550 power supply. All of them are tried-and-true classics and all of them should fit comfortably within most people's budgets. That is, unlike our solid-goldXbox controller. Ha ha! Get subscribed so youdon't miss those videos. That is, like, theemptiest-looking computer. Now it's time for what youguys all crave: the GPU. Thing is, as much as we mayall lust after ray tracing, you might surprised to learn that the top ray tracing-capable card was the RTX 2060 in fifthplace with only 3.6% share. Pretty much every current card, then, that is capable of delivering a smooth ray-traced gaming experience is conspicuously absent. The 3070 isn't even on the list and the 3080 maintainsa slim .6% market share. So it ended up being a pretty close race with the GTX 1060leading the pack at 9.4%. Okay. Get outta here. (Linus grunts) We've gone with the 6-gig model since that's how muchVRAM 23.5% of you have, and with 66.7% of yourunning 1080p displays, this should be more than good enough. All that remains is storage. On average you guys are running over one terabyte of storage. It didn't specify whether it'ssolid state or mechanical, so we're putting an SSD in here just to make our benchmarkingrun a little bit faster. And that's it. Ain't she a beauty? Looks to me like a lean, mean Steam machine. Or at least an LTT Steamgame-playing machine, since that whole Steam Machine idea totally, unexpectedly, fizzled and died. Let's go ahead and fire her up. But what games should we play? How 'bout the top fivegames on Steam? All right. So we got "CS:GO," "Dota 2,""PUBG," "Apex Legends," and "Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer"? Wait. Is that really "Garry's Mod" and "Half-Life 2:Deathmatch" in fifth place? Did this thing take us back in time? To a time when there was noLTT underwear on lttstore.com? Nope. They're definitely there. Go check 'em out at the link below. As it turns out, mostSource mods running on Steam contribute to this inflated number, including the "GTA V"community with the FiveM mod. So "Team Fortress 2" in sixth place? Let's go with that. Who put this here? Whee! Okay, I'm gonna fight this guy. Honestly, it's running pretty darn well. We're at 80, 90 FPS,dropping as low as 70, but this is totally anacceptable gameplay experience. Now you might've noticed the, ah, details of the game arelookin' a little basic. That's on purpose. That'sso that we get enough FPS. How have I not... Dang it. Aw, I'm knocked... I'm dead. I'm still a winner'cause the game ran okay. And overall, the average Steam gamerwith a machine like this is having a pretty smooth experience. Only "Apex Legends" and"PUBG" fell to 60-FPS lows, with most of these competitive titles here managing closer to 100 FPS with reasonably consistent frame times. Now, that's not to say that these games wouldn't benefit from a faster machine. We did a video back in 2019 demonstrating the competitive advantage of running at higher FPS, even if you don't have ahigh-refresh rate monitor, since your eyes will getmore up-to-date information than your competitors'. And "CS:GO" was an example of a situation where that difference is quite noticeable. It's really at its best when you can crank out over 200, 300 FPS. The competency of our... Competence? Whatever. Of our Steam PC shouldn'tbe that surprising though, I guess. Most of these games are actuallyfrom around the same era. So to kick things up a notchwe're heading over to Twitch to see if we could use this thing to play along with our favorite streamers. We didn't plan on this part of the video, but it is an interesting point to make. Sometimes your CPU canactually be a bottleneck when it comes to downloadingand installing games. But our 4770K is actuallykeeping up pretty nicely with a 107-megabyte-per-second download of "CoD: Warzone" from Battle.net, so... Oh yeah, it's at 20, 30% CPU usage. Not bad. Really? They make you watch a cutscene. See, every other gameknows not to do this. Okay, here we go. Whee! Let's see if I can manage to stay alive slightly longer than last time. You know, the script calls for me to say this isn't running verywell, but it's fine. Definitely a little chuggierand a little more tear-y than what we looked at before, but actually looks not bad. Okay, that's a lot of tearing right there. When I was a kid I'd have been absolutely elated to have anything over 60 FPS regardless of whether I had tosmear Vaseline on the screen for that free anti-aliasing. As for the rest of our games, you know, being on older hardware reallyisn't the end of the world. "Fortnite" was only a little rough when flying in on the Battle Bus, and even "GTA V" was able torun at plenty of FPS by default and even looked pretty decent if we didn't mind losing alittle bit of frame rate. So there are a coupleof lessons here for us, with the biggest one being that all it takes tojoin the PC master race is an interest in computers, and the gatekeepers whofawn over brand-new hardware and put down anything lessthan the latest and greatest can go suck an egg. Because unless you're trying to run brand-new triple-A gameson high or ultra settings, like "Cyberpunk," "The Medium,"or "Microsoft Flight Sim," you can have a reallysolid gaming experience with hardware like this. And the best part is thatwith some savvy eBay-ing you can build a machine like this, or upgrade a non-gaming machinethat you get your hands on, for anywhere from 750 to $1,300. Or maybe even less if you're willing to get a little creative with a Dremel to fit things together. With that said, a lot of this hardware isstarting to show its age, and if you upgraded you'ddefinitely appreciate the smoother animations andadditional image quality, especially in anything fast-paced. So there you have it,ladies and gentlemen, the average Steam hardware survey PC. Are any of you guys out there running any of these components? Of course you are.
